Originally developed for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder in an outpatient setting, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has now shown effectiveness in 30 Random Controlled Trials (RCT’s) across additional contexts, for increased populations, and at substantial cost savings to communities over “treatment as usual”. Research and clinical success has resulted in an explosion in the popularity of this treatment.
Informal adaptations to the DBT model have also proliferated as agencies with limited funding for formal training and staffing respond to competing demands to provide high quality treatment and to serve a large population. Concerns about the effectiveness of these simplified adaptations has become an important issue to consumer groups and to those who fund this service.
This introductory training will provide an overview of the DBT model, highlighting each component of the comprehensive treatment. The training will also highlight the complexity of issues surrounding this “adapt or adopt” conflict. Creative responses that represent a synthesis of these polarities to preserve adherent treatment will be discussed and time made available for consultation on program start up.
In addition, new developments in accreditation of programs and certification of providers will be introduced, with discussion of implications for treatment funding.
Who should attend?
This training is open to providers of all training levels in mental health settings. Certificates of attendance will be provided for those who attend the full training.
